When it comes to WordPress themes there are a lot of options. A lot of which can be confusing and overwhelming for a new WordPress user to choose from.Subscribe Today
Well, that is just what I am going to help you out with today. Choosing the right theme to fit your online needs. Because not all themes will be suited to your online needs.
Light VS. Dark WordPress Themes
The first thing that I want to touch base on is what type of WordPress themes you should always use. Light or Dark? It is said that statistically speaking LIGHT themes get a much better response than dark themes.
The reason for this I believe is psychological. We naturally associate the dark as a place where bad things can happen to you. Like a person who avoids going down a dark alleyway for fear of being mugged!
So it is no wonder that when we encounter a website that is using a really dark theme, that we are naturally distrusting of it right off the bat. Before we even read the content we are immediately on guard. It is just instinct!
Just like the dark alleyway, many people will not stick around for long. Worse, if you are using a dark theme and are looking to make money from your website you have already lost the trust of your visitor before they even begin to see what your website has to offer!
Darren Rowse over at Problogger.net did a poll just to see which people preferred. 47% of people prefer light themes!
Okay, so all we have to do is follow the Jedi code when it comes to WordPress themes and stay away from the dark side! Pretty easy to do since there are a lot more light themes out there than dark.
Where To Get WordPress Themes
Here is something that a lot of new bloggers don’t know about. WordPress (while they have a nice selection of themes) is not the only place to get themes for your CMS.
I would also like to point out that while a lot of WordPress themes may seem free, they really are not. They are more of a demo for you to see if you like them. Every theme has different attributes and configuration options to suit different users. A lot of these configuration options are not available with free WordPress themes.
I also wanted to touch base real quick on some of these so-called free themes. Remember this rule! Don’t use free themes. Free themes are not only limited in customization (and most look pretty ugly) but they can also contain hidden links that you may not know about!
So go out and buy a theme for your website. It is always the best route to go!
There are some really great theme developers out there that (in my option) have a lot better theme options than WordPress offers.
Studiopress: Studiopress themes are my #1 theme recommendation. I recommend these themes because they are some of the most stable and SEO friendly themes that you can purchase.
These themes will not break on you! Yes, themes can break on you. Sometimes the developers go out of business or they just don’t keep up with WordPress updates.
With StudioPress, you know that they are not only keeping up with any updates that WordPress comes out with, but they also keep up with the latest security updates as well.
That is why I believe and always recommend StudioPress Themes for WordPress. (Affiliate link)
ThemeForest: ThemeForest is always my second recommendation for themes. Themeforest is an excellent place to get some really nice themes.
They are also a little cheaper than Studiopress, so if you are on a budget, this is an excellent way to go. Two themes I have to recommend is their Willow and Uncoded themes. Themeforest Themes for WordPress. (Affiliate link)
These are my top two website recommendations for themes. If you are looking to purchase a great theme then I would start with these
Choosing The Right WordPress Themes
Themes, themes, and more themes! When it comes to choosing a WordPress theme you want to pick a theme that will suit your needs.
Themes come in all styles and colors which if used right will help your business. There are a few things that you should look at when purchasing WordPress themes for your website.
When it comes to the style of the theme that you choose you want to make sure that your theme has all the functionality that you are going to need online.
Different people need different things. If you are a blogger than you are not going to want a theme that is more designed to showcase a small business or photography.
One thing that you should always do is check the theme out for yourself through the DEMO button. All themes have one and if they don’t you don’t want it!
In the theme demo go to the navigation bar just like you would a normal website and go through each menu option as it will give you a better understanding of the theme’s design and intent.
Make sure the font of the theme looks nice and is in black and white. The reason why I specify black and white text is because there are a lot of color blind people who will not see the text if it is an off color.
You also want to read any information that the demo gives you while you are surfing through the theme demo site. This information will be in the menu and footer sections.
Each menu item gives you a specific demo of the theme itself. Some may even have an FAQ (frequently asked questions) section that may help you with any questions that you have about the theme before buying it.
Always go through the theme thoroughly and make sure it is a right fit for your business.

Getting The Right WordPress Themes
When getting the right WordPress theme I always suggest taking your time. Thoroughly go through each theme and see if it is the right fit for you.
Another great idea is to go on social media and ask what themes are great for the niche that you are in. Chances are someone will know what themes would or would not work for you and your business.
I would also recommend asking your blog coach if you have one. Blog coaches are pretty knowledgeable about all types of different themes that are out there and can really help you find a theme that will suit your online needs and business.
Finally, if you are still unsure about the themes, then go contact the developer company themselves. This is a great way to get any specific information that you might need!
